Multi-Microphone Speaker Localization Demo System

On this work we present a project dealing with indoor speaker localization using microphones array. The main goal of this project was to establish a demo system inside one of the faculty rooms which will be able to provide accurate localization of a person speaking inside the room. We divided this goal into two sub goals: Establishing the physical demo system – microphones, sampler, power supply; Writing a signal processing algorithm based on known localization algorithms from the research literature.
The demo system that we built is composed of 8 microphones, an analog to digital sampler, a power supplier and a laptop. The signal processing algorithm is based on a localization method which uses the time differences of arrival (TDOA) of the speech signals to the microphones.
We managed to provide an estimation of the speaker location accurate to 2.5 percent of the room size. Furthermore, this work placed the foundations for more projects that will improve the current results and add new abilities to the existing system.
