Registration of Thermal and Visual Videos for Cancer Detection

A method for early detection of cancerous cells in the oral cavity area, which is studied today by HT-BioImaging, is based on the reaction to heating of healthy cells compared to cancerous cells.
Areas containing cancerous cells cool down differently than healthy areas. One can analyze the transition and assume where the cancerous cells are.
The project’s goal is to create a calibration and registration between the heat image and the color image of the oral cavity area, enabling a doctor to detect where exactly cancerous cells that have been suggested by the system are located.
As part of the project we tested a variety of known algorithms in the image processing field, in order to develop the needed connection between the images.
The methods and algorithms had been tested on engineered images and on real oral cavity images, which are the type of images expected to be analyzed at the end of the process.
By the end of this project we found that the tested algorithms did not achieve the required goal and future work is needed to achieve it.
